Kauffman Foundation News (11/17/11): Global Entrepreneurship Week News Updates
Global Entrepreneurship Week Update
News highlights from around the globe
With Global Entrepreneurship Week halfway through, here are highlights of just some of the news and events this week:
Opening Day Bell. Entrepreneur Mark Cuban kicked off GEW by ringing the bell at the New York Stock Exchange Monday morning just before participating in the Movers & Changers Forum, a featured GEW event.
Global Startup Rates Going Down. The OECD released an update to its quarterly Kauffman-funded “Timely Indicators of Entrepreneurship” report that measures the number of new enterprises across a number of countries where updated information is available. The findings reinforce the importance of initiatives such as Global Entrepreneurship Week: With a few exceptions, overall rates are showing signs of a slowdown.
Startup Weekend Teams to Battle. The Global Startup Battle started last weekend, when about half of the more than 50 Startup Weekend events took place; the other half are ready for next weekend. All the Startup Weekend global events winners will take part in the Global Startup Battle, where one winner will be chosen as Global Startup Weekend Champion. Winning teams will upload one-minute pitch videos beginning next week into the Startup Weekend Facebook page.
Collegiate Inventors Honored. The Collegiate Inventors Competition has announced its winners: Kyle Allison of Boston University was honored in the Graduate Category for his new therapy to eliminate bacterial persisters, and a team from Yale University, Elizabeth Asai, Nickolas Demas, and Elliot Swart, in the Undergraduate Category for a handheld imaging system that helps to detect potentially cancerous skin lesions. Other college and university students chosen as finalists for the Competition come from the biomedical engineering, cancer research and information technology fields.
