Economy Makes Entrepreneurial Path Rocky for Next Generation
A recent poll shows that the so-called millennial generation, ages 18 to 34, are inclined to be entrepreneurs, but the beleaguered economy is holding them back. The nationwide cell phone and landline survey, conducted by the Young Invincibles in conjunction with Lake Research Partners and Bellwether Research with support from the Kauffman Foundation, polled 872 millennials on their thoughts about the economy and entrepreneurship.

Boston Firms Take Top Honors in Startup Open
Kavita Shukla, founder of Fenugreen, and Jason Ethier, founder of Dynamo Micropower, were named the grand prize winners for the Startup Open, a competition for startups with high-growth potential featured as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2011. The two Boston-area entrepreneurs were selected from a group of startups dubbed the “GEW 50″ announced last month. In selecting the winners, a panel of judges took into account each of the startups’ concept, growth projections, and knowledge of their industry.

Startup Weekend Becomes Kauffman Affiliate
Startup Weekend, a global series of events for entrepreneurs, aspiring founders, and startup supporters, is now an affiliate of the Kauffman Foundation. While Startup Weekend continues to operate autonomously, becoming a Kauffman affiliate allows the organization to increase its geographical reach, conduct more frequent events, and build long-term sustainability. This month during Global Entrepreneurship Week, 700 teams worked on business plans and prototypes at Startup Weekend events on five continents. In addition, the organization has announced the winner of the Global Startup Battle , a friendly competition among the global Startup Weekend community.

Turning Kids on to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
A new Kauffman Foundation video tells the story of Kansas City students involved in Project Lead the Way and FIRST Robotics. Together the programs form the KC STEM Alliance, an innovative approach to strengthen science, technology, engineering, and math programs. Housed at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Computing and Engineering and funded by the Kauffman Foundation, the KC STEM Alliance is a one-of-a-kind model to consolidate organizations in the Kansas City region.

New Firms Essential to Growing Economy
Kauffman Foundation senior scholar Brink Lindsey presented testimony on Capital Hill this month on the connection between encouraging new businesses and fostering innovation. He outlined a series of legislative proposals put forth by the Kauffman Foundation before the Subcommittee on Technology and Innovation, House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

What’s Your ‘Gig’ idea?
The Kauffman Foundation has launched KCGigIdeas.com , a new website for the local community and innovators to network and share ideas and resources about Google Fiber, the ultra high-speed Internet service coming to Kansas City. The online platform allows users to post ideas and access information and resources that will keep them well informed on the Google Fiber project, with service access slated to begin in 2012.

Kauffman Foundation Opens Nominations for Fellowships
Nominations are being accepted for the Kauffman Junior Faculty Fellowship in Entrepreneurship Research. The Kauffman Foundation will award up to seven Junior Faculty Fellowship grants to junior faculty members in the United States whose research has the potential to make significant contributions to the body of literature in entrepreneurship. Each Fellow’s university will receive a grant of $40,000 over two years to support the research activities of the Fellow.
